Year 5: Reflection and rotational symmetry

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

For more information visit https://tahurangi.education.govt.nz/updates-to-nzmaths

TIMSS assesses students’ ability to apply the properties of symmetries, such as distance of matching points from the mirror line, and orientation of figures. Students also need to identify the symmetry of shapes, such as circles, triangles and quadrilaterals.

This unit of work will improve students’ understanding of symmetry across a range of contexts:

Students will also benefit from working independently or collaboratively on the following student e-ako on the Geometric thinking pathway (information about e-ako maths):

  • G3.20: Using transformations and symmetry

Figure It Out resources for symmetry at Level 3 include:
