Year 5: Fractions, particularly equivalence

TIMSS assesses students’ ability to represent fractions (words, symbols, continuous and sets models), compare/order fractions, add and subtract fractions (related denominators),and apply fractions in problem situations.

These units of work will improve students’ understanding of fractions across a range of contexts:

Students will also benefit from working independently or collaboratively on the following student e-ako on the Multiplicative thinking pathway (information about e-ako maths):

  • F3.10: Exploring improper fractions
  • F3.10+: More practice exploring improper fractions
  • F3.30: Exploring equivalent fractions
  • F3.30+: More practice exploring equivalent fractions
  • F3.20: Adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator
  • F3.20+: More practice adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator
