Year 4 week 3 (number knowledge and patterns)

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

This week we focus on the quick recall of our addition and subtraction facts, and creating and completing patterns.

This page suggests activities for each day. Click to download a printable PDF to help keep track of progress.

Day 1

Number facts

  • Go to the activity Addition facts to 20 – test yourself and follow the instructions for the variation. Sort the facts into two piles, ones you can recall quickly and ones you need more practice on.

  • This activity aims to increase how fast you can recall the addition facts with sums from 11 to 20. Recalling means that you “know” the fact and don’t need to count fingers (or other objects) to work it out.

  • If you already know all your addition facts, go to the number facts pathway in e-ako maths

  • Play the "Number facts" game "Making 100" a few times.

Patterns e-ako

  • Go to the Patterns and relationships pathway in e-ako maths

  • Choose e-ako PR2.30 (the third yellow button on the second row).

  • Work through pages 1-11.

Day 2

Number facts

  • If you have addition facts in your learning pile from Day 1, select 2-3 new facts to practice today.

  • Go to the activity Addition bingo and follow the instructions.

Patterns e-ako

  • Go back to e-ako PR2.30 on the Patterns and relationships pathway in e-ako maths

  • Work through pages 12-21.

Day 3

Number facts

  • If you have addition facts in your learning pile from Day 1, select 2-3 new facts to practice today. Remember to recheck the facts that you learned yesterday and if you can recall the answers then move them to the known pile.

  • Go to the activity Addition loopy cards and follow the instructions.

Patterns e-ako

  • Go to the Patterns and relationships pathway in e-ako maths

  • Go to e-ako PR2.50 (the fifth button on the second row).

  • Work through pages 1-14 with your child.

Patterns activity

Day 4

Number facts

  • If you have addition facts in your learning pile, select 2-3 new facts to learn today.

  • If you know all the addition facts, go to the activity Subtraction facts to 20 – test yourself and follow the instructions for the variation.  Sort the facts into two piles, ones you can recall quickly and ones you need more practice on.

  • If you know all your addition and subtraction facts then go back to the Number facts pathway in e-ako maths and select another game.

Patterns e-ako

  • Go back to e-ako PR2.50 on the Patterns and relationships pathway in e-ako maths

  • Work through pages 15-24.

Patterns activity

Day 5

Number facts

Patterns e-ako

  • If you like, work through one of the two e-ako from this week again.  You do this by selecting “reset” instead of “start” on the pathway page. Please note that if you do this then all your answers are cleared and the e-ako is reset to zero points.
