Purpose:

You can help you child practice basic addition facts.

What you need:

  • The game template (PDF, 37KB)
  • Counters in two colours
  • Two markers to indicate the numbers being added.

What to do:

Player One starts by putting a marker under two numbers in the row below the board.

The numbers are added and the answer on the board is covered with a counter of their chosen colour.

Player Two moves only one marker to a new number in the row beneath the board. The new combination is added together and the answer is covered with a counter of their chosen colour.

Play continues until one player has four of their counters in a row vertically, horizontally or diagonally. They are the winner.

If the answer to adding two markers together is already covered the player loses that turn.

He Whakawhitinga Kōrero:

  • Whakatakotoria he porotiti ki raro i ētahi tau e rua i tēnei rārangitanga tau. (Place counters under two numbers in this line of numbers.)
  • Tāpirihia ngā tau e rua. He aha te otinga? Uhia te otinga ki tētahi o ō porotiti ki te papa tākaro nei. (Add the two numbers together. What is the answer? Cover the answer on the game board with one of your counters.)
  • Kei a au ināianei. Ka nuku au i tētahi o ngā porotiti kotahi i raro i te rārangitanga tau. Ka tāpiri au i ngā tau e rua, ā, ka uhia taua tau i te papa tākaro ki tētahi o aku porotiti. (My turn now. I will move one of the counters under the line of numbers. I’ll add the two numbers together and cover that number on the game board with one of my counters.)
  • Kei a koe ināianei. (Your turn now)
  • Ko te mea tuatahi kia whā ana porotiti e noho rārangi mai ana, ahakoa he rārangi poutū, rārangi huapae, rārangi hauroki rānei, ko ia te toa.  (The first to have 4 counters in a line, either vertical, horizontal or diagonal is the winner.)
