Year 8: week 1 (number knowledge and geometry)

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

This week we focus on multiplication and division basic facts, and designing figures using reflection (flips), rotation (turns), translation (slides) and enlargement.

This page suggests activities for each day. Click to download a printable PDF to help keep track of progress.

Day 1

Number facts activity

  • Go to the activity Multiplication - test yourself and follow the instructions for the variation.
  • Keep the pile of facts you don't yet know somewhere safe.

OR

Number facts e-ako

  • Go to the number facts pathway in e-ako maths.
  • Choose the multiplication and division learning tool.
  • Click “Check all facts” and answer the questions. The green ticks show the facts you know.

Geometry e-ako

  • Go to the geometry pathway in e-ako maths.
  • Choose e-ako G4.10 (the first yellow button on the fourth row).
  • Work through pages 1-6 which are about the symmetry of kōwhaiwhai patterns. When on page 5 create a glossary of the five patterns to help you through the e-ako.
  • Explain to a family member about the symmetry of kōwhaiwhai patterns.

Geometry activity

  • Go to the rich task Christchurch 74 and follow the instructions. What transformations did you use (reflection, rotation, translation)?

Day 2

Number facts activity

  • If you have multiplication facts in your learning pile from Day 1, select 2-3 new facts to practice today.
  • Ask a family member to test you and if you know them you can move them to your known facts pile.
  • Go to the activity Common Multiple Challenge and follow the instructions.

OR

Number facts e-ako

  • If you have facts to learn, spend some time learning them.
  • Go to the number facts pathway in e-ako maths and play the “Number Facts” game “All Numbers” a few times.
  • If you have no facts to learn, go to the number facts pathway in e-ako maths.
  • Play the "Hundredths Frame" game “Making 1” a few times.

Geometry activity

  • Go to the activity Kowhaiwhai, and follow the instructions.

Geometry e-ako

  • Go back to e-ako G4.10 on the geometry pathway in e-ako maths.
  • Work through pages 11-14 which are about creating kōwhaiwhai patterns.

Day 3

Number facts activity

  • Go to the activity Division - test yourself and follow the instructions for the variation.
  • Add the facts you don't yet know to the collection of multiplication facts you don't know.

OR

Number facts e-ako

  • If you have facts to learn, spend some time learning them.
  • Ask a family member to test you. What facts have you learned so far?
  • If you have no facts to learn, go to the number facts pathway in e-ako maths.
  • Try to beat your score on the "Hundredths Frame" game “Making 1”.

Geometry e-ako

  • Go back to e-ako G4.10 on the geometry pathway in e-ako maths.
  • Work through pages 15-20 which are about finding symmetry in kōwhaiwhai patterns.

Geometry activity

  • Go to the activity I spy Symmetry.
  • Look at Activity Two (Page 23). There are five kōwhaiwhai patterns.
  • Print this copymaster if possible and complete Questions 1 and 2.
  • Discuss with a family member how you found the repeating element in each pattern.

Day 4

Number facts activity

    • If you have multiplication or division facts in your learning pile, select 2-3 new facts to practice today.
    • Ask a family member to test you and if you know them you can move them to your known facts pile.
    • Go to the activity Common Factor Challenge and follow the instructions.

    OR

    Number facts e-ako

    • If you have facts to learn, spend some time learning them.
    • Ask a family member to test you. What facts have you learned so far?
    • If you have no facts to learn, go to the number facts pathway in e-ako maths.
    • Play the "Fraction Pairs" game  “Fractions to make 1”, “Fractions to make 2”, or “Improper Fractions to make 2” a few times.

    Geometry e-ako

    • Go back to e-ako G4.10 on the geometry pathway in e-ako maths.
    • Work through pages 21-28, which are about enlargement.

    Geometry activity

    • Go to the rich task Reptiles.
    • Complete the task, using squared paper draw shapes if you need to.
    • What transformations (reflection, rotation and enlargement) do you use to arrange the four shapes.
    • Discuss with a family member what you learned about Reptiles.

    Day 5

    Number facts activity

    OR

    Number facts e-ako

    • If you have facts to learn, go back to the multiplication and division learning tool and “Check all facts” again. Hopefully you’ve got more green ticks now.
    • Return to the number facts pathway and try to beat your score on the “Number Facts” game.
    • If you have no facts to learn, go to the number facts pathway in e-ako maths.
    • Play the "Fraction Pairs" game  “Fractions to make 1”, “Fractions to make 2”, or “Improper Fractions to make 2” a few times.

    Geometry activity

    • Go to the activity Growing in water.
    • Complete the task then check your answers at the bottom of this page.
    • Go to the activity Escher Envy.
    • Create your own Escher tessellation either with paper or on a computer.
    • Discuss with a family member how transformations are used to make tessellations.
