This week we focus on multiplication and division basic facts, and working with length and area.
This page suggests activities for each day. Click to download a printable PDF to help keep track of progress.
Day 1
Number facts
- Go to the number facts pathway in e-ako maths.
- Choose the multiplication and division learning tool.
- Click “Check all facts” and answer the questions. The green ticks show the facts you know.
Measurement e-ako
- Go to the measurement pathway in e-ako maths.
- Choose e-ako M3.7 (the seventh yellow button on the third row).
- Work through pages 1-7 which are about measuring lengths.
- Write down all the units of length you know of. How are these units connected? For example, how many centimetres are in a metre?
Measurement activity
- Go to the activity Bouncing Back. Complete only Activity One. You may need to look online to find out how to draw a scatterplot. Software like Excel and CODAP can help.
- Check your answers at the bottom of this page.
- If you drop a ball from twice as high, does it bounce twice as high? Why does that happen? Explain your ideas to a family member.
Day 2
Number facts
- If you have facts to learn go back to the multiplication and division learning tool.
- Click “Learn a new fact” and complete the mini lesson. Do this three times.
- Click “Check recent facts” and answer the questions.
- Return to the number facts pathway and play the “Number Facts” game “All Numbers” a few times.
- If you have no facts to learn, play the game Calculator Golf. You will need a calculator.
Measurement e-ako
- Go back to e-ako M3.7 on the measurement pathway in e-ako maths.
- Work through pages 8-13 which are about measuring the area of a Marae.
- If you know the side lengths of a rectangle, in metres, how do you calculate the area? Explain your method to a family member.
Measurement activity
- Go to the activity Can You? Note that the population of New Zealand is now about 4 700 000 people.
- Check your answers at the bottom of this page.
- Does your household use 750 cans per year? If not, why do you think the number is so high? Explain your answer to a family member.
Day 3
Number facts
- If you have facts to learn go back to the multiplication and division learning tool.
- Click “Learn a new fact” and complete the mini lesson. Do this three times.
- Click “Check recent facts” and answer the questions.
- Return to the number facts pathway and play the “Number Facts” game “All Numbers” a few times.
- If you have no facts to learn, play the game Matrix. Instead of changing a dice with stickers you can use a set of playing cards with the numbers 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
- Play a game with Gina’s Board. You could compete against a family member.
Measurement e-ako
- Go back to e-ako M3.7 on the measurement pathway in e-ako maths.
- Work through pages 14-22 which are about measuring the area of a Marae.
- Write down the difference between length and area. What are the units of measurement used for length and are used in this story?
Measurement activity
- Go to the activity Pondering Pendulums.
- Check your answers at the bottom of this page.
- Why is it that a pendulum takes the same time to complete a swing, even though the swing is shorter? Make a pendulum that is exactly 1 metre long. How long does it take to complete one swing? You may be surprised!
Day 4

- If you have facts to learn go back to the multiplication and division learning tool.
- Click “Learn a new fact” and complete the mini lesson. Do this three times.
- Click “Check recent facts” and answer the questions.
- Return to the number facts pathway and play the “Number Facts” game “All Numbers” a few times.
- If you have no facts to learn, play the game Matrix. Instead of changing a dice with stickers you can use a set of playing cards with the numbers 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
- Work on Activity Two. First play a game with each grid then answer the questions.
Measurement e-ako
- Go back to e-ako M3.7 on the measurement pathway in e-ako maths.
- Work through pages 23-26 which are about measuring calculating areas and using hectares as a unit.
- How big is a hectare? Look at your section. Is your section, house and all, bigger or smaller than one hectare?
Measurement activity
- Go to the activity Dynamic Darts. Do some online research to create different darts. Complete the task.
- Check your answers at the bottom of this page. Scroll down to find the answers.
- What things can you do to a dart to improve its flight length? Explain to a family member.
Day 5
Number facts
- If you have facts to learn go back to the multiplication and division learning tool and “Check all facts” again. Hopefully you’ve got more green ticks now. Make a set of Flash Cards for the facts you still don’t know. Practice!
- Return to the number facts pathway and try to beat your score on the “Number Facts” game.
- If you have no facts to learn, play the game Matrix. Create your own grid and try it out by playing the game.
- What changes would you make to your grid? Why?

- Go to the activity Face Prints.
- Check your answers at the bottom of this page.
- Where are faceprints used? Why is it important to use a ratio of lengths to identify a matching faceprint? Why does the notice at immigration gates say “look at the camera” and ask that glasses are removed?
