'Scooping' to encourage partitioning

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

“For a group of students who are stuck on counting back for subtraction.....”

To subtract, advanced counters count back one by one, often making errors related to where to start the backward count.  Therefore, when teachers model subtraction using tens frames, it is important that they encourage their students to physically scoop and remove groups of counters so that they will better develop the partitioning concept.

Domain: Subtraction
Transition: 4 → 5
Barrier: Still counting back to subtract.
