Purpose

These exercises and activities are for students to use independently of the teacher to practice number properties.

Achievement Objectives
NA2-1: Use simple additive strategies with whole numbers and fractions.

Activity

Prior Knowledge

Identify ones and tens in any two digit number

Background

This activity uses place value partitioning as a strategy for solving subtraction problems.  This strategy is useful in problems when the ones digit is the number being subtarcted is larger than the ones in the starting number, e.g. 41- 15.

Comments on the Exercises

Exercise 1
Asks students to identigy if the number has been correctly partitioned

Exercise 2
Asks students to complete the partition for the subtraction question.
