Visual Linear Algebra

Thanks for visiting NZMaths.
We are preparing to close this site and currently expect this to be in June 2024
but we are reviewing this timing due to the large volume of content to move and
improvements needed to make it easier to find different types of content on

Students are supported to solve linear algebra equations. The equation is provided both algebraically, and as a diagrammatic model. As students choose appropriate operation to carry out on both sides of the equation, the model is updated to show their progress towards a solution.

Teacher notes

  • Students are provided with an equation to solve, and can choose either to solve it or see another random equation.
  • The equation is modelled diagramatically.
  • Students are supported to choose an operation to carry out on both sides of the equation.
  • Students are asked to identify the result of that operation.
  • As the equation is updated, the diagram is modified to match.
