Year 9: week 2 (linear relationships and integers)

Thanks for visiting NZMaths.
We are preparing to close this site and currently expect this to be in June 2024
but we are reviewing this timing due to the large volume of content to move and
improvements needed to make it easier to find different types of content on
Tāhūrangi. We will update this message again shortly.

This week we focus on connecting equations and graphs of linear relationships, and working with integers.

This page suggests activities for each day. Click to download a printable PDF to help keep track of progress.

Day 1

Locating coordinates

  • Go to the learning object Plasers: choose coordinates (+).
  • The game helps you to remember how coordinates work and practises adding integers (positive and negative numbers)
  • Spend at least ten minutes playing the game.

Integers e-ako

  • Go to the additive thinking pathway in e-ako maths.
  • Choose e-ako AS4:50 (the 5th yellow button in the fourth row).
  • Work through pages 1-10 which are about adding integers.
  • Explain to a family member; “What happens when you add a negative number?”

Integers Activity

  • Go to the activity Learning to Drive and answer the questions.
  • Check your answers at the bottom of this page.
  • How is going back forty years like adding -40?

Day 2

Locating coordinates

Integers e-ako

  • Go back to e-ako AS4:50 on the additive thinking pathway in e-ako maths.
  • Work through pages 11-20 which are subtracting integers.
  • Explain to a family member; “When does subtracting a negative number have the same effect as adding a positive number?”

Integers activity

  • Go to the activity Walking the Plank. You will need to create two dice to play the game or alter two dice with stickers.
  • Record the results of your games.
  • Check your answers at the bottom of this page.
  • Explain to a family member; "How is facing the boat, and walking backwards three paces, like subtracting -3?"

Day 3

Locating coordinates

  • Go to the learning object Plasers: choose coordinates (+/-).
  • In this version the plane has positive and negative numbers. Can you figure out how the four quadrants work?
  • Spend at least ten minutes playing the game.

Integers e-ako

  • Go to the additive thinking pathway in e-ako maths.
  • Choose e-ako AS4:60 (the 6th yellow button in the fourth row).
  • Work through pages 1-9 which are about a dollars and debts model for integers.
  • Explain to a family member; “Why does losing a debt have the same effect as getting more money?”

Integers Activity

Day 4

Locating coordinates

Integers e-ako

  • Go back to e-ako AS4:60 on the additive thinking pathway in e-ako maths.
  • Work through pages 10-15 which are about subtracting integers with a dollars and debts model.
  • Does subtracting a number always make the answer smaller than the number you start with? Explain this to someone else.

Integers activity

Day 5

Graphing equations

Integers e-ako

  • Go back to e-ako AS4:60 on the additive thinking pathway in e-ako maths.
  • Work through pages 16-25 which are about subtracting integers with a dollars and debts model.
  • What are the rules for adding and subtracting integers? Explain these rules to someone else. Give some examples.
