Purpose

These exercises and activities are for students to use independently of the teacher to practice number properties

Achievement Objectives
NA3-1: Use a range of additive and simple multiplicative strategies with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Specific Learning Outcomes
recognise the meaning of the equals sign
recognise that the order of addends does not affect the answer
Description of Mathematics

Activity

Prior knowledge

experience with writing equations

Background

The exercises in this activity explore the idea of order of operations, for example 3 + 5 - 4 = 5 + 3 - 4.

Comments on the Exercises

Exercises 1 and 2
Asks students if an equation is true or false.  True eqautions have the same numbers on each side. Questions include whole numbers, fractions and decimals.
 
Exercise 3
Asks students to find a number to balance the equation.
 
Exercise 4
Asks students to replace the numbers with algebraic symbols.
