Juanita has 8 coloured pencils. She gets 5 more coloured pencils. How many does she have now?

Student: [nods head thirteen times while mouthing numbers] Thirteen.
Teacher: How did you work that out?
Student: I counted eight in my head, and I counted five more and then I counted them all and got to thirteen.

The Counting from One by Imaging stage is characterised by students counting all of the objects. Students at this stage are able to image visual patterns of the objects in their mind and count them.
