5: Early Additive - Proportions and Ratios

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.           
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz). 
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024. 
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Jane's family have 24 DVDs. One quarter of these belong to Jane. How many DVDs does Jane own?

Student: Twelve and twelve makes twenty four. Half is twelve. Six plus six makes twelve so a quarter is six. Jane must have six.

At the Early Additive stage, students have begun to recognise that numbers are abstract units that can be treated simultaneously as wholes or can be partitioned and recombined. This is called part-whole thinking.
