Simple Powers

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Purpose:

You can help your child to learn some simple number powers.

What you need:

  • Game cards (PDF,48KB) . You can print these or make your own.
  • Cardboard. (Old cereal boxes are good).

What to do:

Glue the cards on to cardboard. Cut the cards and shuffle them. The aim of this activity is to arrange the cards in a continuous line with the power and answer matching up.

What to expect your child to do:

To be able to correctly match up powers with the answer. To begin with they may need to use a calculator to check their answers.

Variation:

Deal 4 cards to each player and like dominoes take turns to add a card to form a line.

He Kupu Māori:

riwhiriwhi (~a)
shuffle
taupū
power, exponent
otinga
answer, result
pūrua
to the power of 2
pūtoru
to the power of 3

He Whakawhitinga Kōrero:

  • Riwhiriwhia ngā kāri. (Shuffle the cards.)
  • Ko tā tātou mahi, he whakarārangi i ngā kāri. Honoa te taupū ki te otinga e tika ana. (What we are doing is putting the cards in a line. Connect the power to the correct answer.)
  • E rua ki te pūtoru. He aha te otinga? (2 to the power of 3 (23). What is the answer?)
  • Whakamahia te tātaitai. Pūwhātia te rima. (Use the calculator. Raise 5 to the power of 4 (54).)
