Fair Game 2 Solution

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Eryn and Ossie were spinning the spinners shown. If the sum of the numbers from the two spinners was even then Eryn won; if it was odd, then Ossie won.

Are these spinners together fair or unfair?

If they are unfair, how can you make them fair?

If they are fair, how can you make them unfair?

Solution

The spinners are unfair as we get an odd number 4/9 of the time and an even number 5/9 of the time.

They could be made fair by making sure that the section containing the 2 one of the spinners covered half of the spinner.
