Purpose

Activity

Prior Knowledge

Basic multiplication facts
Simplify fractions
Convert fractions to decimals
Students who can know simple percentages equivalent to ½ or ¼ etc, and their equivalent value as decimals will find this activity very accessible.

Background

In this activity students use a percentage strip to calculate percentages. The percentage strip allows students to see the percentage as a proportion.  Percentages can be used to compare fractions.

Comments on the Exercises

Exercise 1
Asks students to use the percentage strips to work out percentages like 9 out of 18.

Exercise 2
Asks students to solve word problems that involve finding a percentage.
