Reading Numbers up to 1000

Purpose:

You can help your child to read any number up to 1000.  

What you need:

Calculator

What to do:

Ask your child to enter a hundreds number and read it to you. Check they have read it correctly. 
Instruction: Ask your child to enter a hundreds number on the calculator. For example: 576. Check that it has been entered correctly. 
 
Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
  5 7 6

 

Instruction: Add 20 on the calculator. Press + 20 = 596

Read out the number (Check that it is correct). Does that make sense?

Follow the same sequence to ask your child similar questions. 

What to expect your child to do:

  • To read the numbers correctly.
  • To check that the calculator answer makes sense and they haven’t press the wrong buttons.

Variation:

Extend the activity to include thousands numbers.

He Whakawhitinga Kōrero:

  • Tuhia te tau ‘toru rau whitu tekau mā rima’ ki te tātaitai. (Write the number 375 on the calculator.)
  • Tuhia he tau ‘rau’ ki te tātaitai. (Write a hundreds number on the calculator.)
  • Pānuihia mai te tau? (Read the number to me.)
  • Tāpirihia te rua tekau ki tēnā tau. (Add 20 to that number.)
  • He aha te otinga? Pānuihia mai. (What is the result? Read it to me.)
