Purpose:

You can help your child read 4-digit numbers and recognise the place value of each digit in 4-digit numbers.

What you need:

Paper and pencil

What to do:

As you drive in the car or walk beside the road, work with your child to read the numbers on vehicles license plates. As you read each number together, write it down.

Ask your child questions about the numbers you see:
What number is in the ones place? The tens place? The hundreds place? The thousands place? For example in the number 5 723, the 3 is in the ones place, the 2 is in the tens place, the 7 is in the hundreds place and the 5 is in the thousands place.

Variation:

  • Challenge your child to reorder the digits to make the largest number possible.
  • Challenge your child to reorder the digits to make the smallest number possible.
  • Challenge your child to reorder the digits to be as close as possible to a preset target number.

He Whakawhitinga Kōrero:

  • Pānuihia mai te tau o tērā motukā. (Read me the number of that car.)
  • Tuhia ki te pepa? (Write it down on paper.)
  • He aha te mati kei te uara tū o ngā tahi? (What is the digit in the ones place?)
  • He aha te mati kei te uara tū o ngā tekau? (What is the digit in the tens place?)
  • He aha te mati kei te uara tū o ngā rau? (What is the digit in the hundreds place?)
  • He aha te mati kei te uara tū o ngā mano? (What is the digit in the thousands place?)
  • He aha te wāhi uara tū o te whitu? (What is the place value of the 7?)
  • Raupapahia ngā mati o taua tau kia puta ai te tau nui rawa atu e taea ana. (Sequence the digits of that number to produce the largest number possible.)
  • Raupapahia ngā mati o taua tau kia puta ai te tau iti rawa atu e taea ana. (Sequence the digits of that number to produce the smallest number possible.)
  • Raupapahia ngā mati o taua tau kia puta ai te tau e tino pātata ana ki te whitu mano. (Sequence the digits of that number to produce the number closest to 7 000.)
