Guess My Number

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Purpose:

You can help your child learn the sequence of numbers up to 1000.

What to do:

Play the "Guess My Number" game:

One player selects a number between a stated range, for example a number between 1 and 1000.

The other players ask questions to identify the number. For example
Is it more than 500?
Is it an even number?
Is it between 200 and 400?
Does it divide by 5 evenly?

Who can find the number using the least number of questions?

Avoid asking about specific numbers, for example "is it 27?", or "is it 36?" until it is obvious that it is correct.

What to expect your child to do:

Encourage your child to be systematic in their approach, eliminating possibilities as questions are answered.

He Kupu Māori:

even number taurua
odd number taukehe

He Whakawhitinga Kōrero:

  • Kōwhiria tētahi tau i waenganui i te kotahi me te kotahi rau. (Select a number between 1 and 100)
  • He nui ake i te rima tekau? (Is it bigger than 50?)
  • He taurua? (Is it an even number?)
  • Kei waenganui i te ono tekau me te waru tekau? (Is it between 60 and 80?)
  • Ka taea te wehe pū ki te rima? (Does it divide exactly by 5?)
