Cut and Paste Algebra

These exercises and activities are for students to use independently of the teacher to practice number properties

Background

In this activity students learn to use the doubling and halving strategy to solve multiplication problems involving decimals and fractions.

Comments on the Exercises

Exercise 1
Asks students to solve multiplication problems using the doubling and halving strategy. Students double the 5 in the problem to 10.

Exercise 2
Asks students to solve multiplication problems using the doubling and halving strategy. In this exercise students multiply by 4 and divide by 4.

Exercise 3
Asks students to solve multiplication problems involving fractions by using the doubling and halving strategies.

Exercise 4
Asks students to explain the formula that generalises the doubling and halving strategy with fractions and solve multiplication problems.

Exercise 5
Asks students to explore rules for division problems

These activities can be used to follow the teaching episodes based on the Cut and Paste activity in Book 6 and are for those students who are able to use the associated number properties.
