Smallest number 1 Solution

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

What is the smallest number of sweets that can be shared evenly by either 4 people or 6 people?

Solution:

If you try all of the numbers of sweets that can be shared between 4 people you will find that the first one that can also be shared between 6 people is 12.

4 sweets can be shared between 4 people, one each.
8 sweets is 2 each for 4 people, but would leave 2 leftover if 6 people each had one.
12 sweets is 3 each for 4 people, or 2 each for 6 people.
