Cutting String 2 Solution

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

A piece of string is cut into three different sized pieces.

The longest piece is twice as long as the middle sized piece and three times as long as the shortest piece. If the shortest piece is 10cm long, how long was the original piece of string?

Solution:

The shortest piece is 10cm long, so the longest piece is 30cm long (three times as long).

The middle sized piece is half as long as the longest piece, so it is 15cm long.

The original piece of string was 10cm + 30cm + 15cm long, or 55cm long.
