The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Tall Tales: Illustrating the year 2 standard

The following examples of student work illustrate achievement at the mathematics standards for year 2.

The task used in this illustration was part of a unit called All about Me in a year 1–2 class. The task was based on level 1 of the health and physical education learning area in The New Zealand Curriculum, with a focus on personal identity and relationships.

The task relates to achievement objectives for Measurement and Number from the mathematics and statistics learning area.

The Task

Tall Tales

Using the questions below, encourage the students to explore various ways of comparing and measuring height.

  1. Compare the heights of two of your friends: Who is taller?
  2. Find a way to measure the height of one of your friends: How tall is your friend?

Some features of students’ work used to make judgments in relation to the mathematics standards are described below. There is also an illustration of the year 1 standard for this task.

New Zealand Curriculum: Level 1 National Standards: After two years at school
In solving problems and modelling situations, students will:
Geometry and Measurement
  • order and compare objects or events by length, area, volume and capacity, weight (mass), turn (angle), temperature, and time by direct comparison and/or counting whole numbers of units (measurement)
Geometry and Measurement
  • compare the lengths, areas, volumes or capacities, and weights of objects and the durations of events, using self-chosen units of measurement
Number and Algebra
  • use a range of counting, grouping, and equal-sharing strategies with whole numbers and fractions (number strategies)
  • know the forward and backward counting sequences of whole numbers to 100 (number knowledge)
Number and Algebra
  • apply counting-on, counting-back, skip-counting, and simple grouping strategies to combine or partition whole numbers
