Pairs to 20

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Purpose:

You can help your child to learn the pairs of numbers that add to 20.

What you need:

  • Games cards (PDF, 23KB). You can print these or make your own.

What to do:

Make the game cards by printing them on to card or make your own using cardboard and marker pens.

Spread out all the cards, face down.

The first person turns over two cards. If they add to 20 the player keeps the pair and has another turn.

If the cards do not add to 20 turn them face down again in the same place. The next player has a turn.

The winner is the player with the most pairs.

What to expect your child to do:

To recognise a matching pair of numbers that add to 20 quickly.

Variations:

  • Count and add in another language.
  • Use the same cards to play Snap. Pairs match when they add to 20.
  • The cards can be used as flash cards. As the cards are turned over the child names the matching pair to 20.

He Kupu Māori:

pair takirua
turn over huripoki (-na)
spread out hora (-hia)

He Whakawhitinga Kōrero:

  • Horahia ngā kāri, ko ngā mata ki raro. (Spread the cards out face down.)
  • Huripokina ētahi kāri e rua. (Turn two cards over.)
  • Tāpirihia ngā tau. Mēnā ko te rua tekau te tapeke, puritia ngā kāri ki a koe. Ki te kore, me huripoki anō kia anga whakararo anō ngā mata. (Add the numbers. If the total is 20, keep the cards. If not turn them back over.)
  • Kei a au ināianei. (My turn now.)
  • Kei a koe te maha ake o ngā takirua kāri. Ko koe te toa! (You’ve got more pairs of cards. You win!)
