# Groupings of 10 and 5 in numbers to 100

### Purpose:

To help your child to learn the number of groups of 10 and 5 in numbers to 100.

### What you need:

• 1 pack of playing cards (Ace = 1 Jack = 0)
• Draw a score card for each player or print out the next page
• Pencils

### Score Card:

 Number of 10s Number Number of 5s 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

### What to do:

Shuffle the cards and place them in a pile between the two players.

The first player draws two cards from the pile and makes a 2-digit number.

For example: 2 and 3 can be arranged as 23 or 32.

The player works out how many tens are in the number and then writes the number in the second column on the score card.

For example 23 would be written in the second column of the scorecard next to the 2.

The player then works out how many 5s are in the number and writes the number in the third column.

The player then works out how many 5s are in the number and writes the number in the third column.

The cards are placed at the bottom of the rule and the net player then has there turn.

The winner is the first person to fill in each space on the scorecard.

### What to expect your child to do:

• Quickly recall the number of 10s in the number.
• Initially they will find the number of 5s in the number by counting in fives. They should progress to quickly recalling the answer.
• Talk about how many numbers are left over after the groups of 5 have been counted. For example: there are 4 groups of 5 in 23 and 3 left over.

• Hangaia tētahi tau mati-rua. (Make a two digit number.)
• E hia ngā tekau kei roto i tēnā tau? (How many tens are there in that number?)
• Tuhia te tau ki te wāhi e tika ana i te kāri whiwhinga. (Write the number in the correct place on the score card.)
• E hia ngā rima kei roto i tēnā tau? (How many fives in that number?)
• He aha koe i mōhio ai? (How do you know?)
• Tatauria ngā rima kei roto i tēnā tau. (Count the fives in that number.)
• E hia atu anō e toe ana. (How many more left over?)
• Kua kī katoa taku kāri whiwhinga. Ko au te toa! (My socre card is all full. I win!)
