Groupings to 10

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Purpose:

You can help your child to practice the addition facts to 10.

What you need:

  • Activity card (PDF,36KB) . You can print these or make your own.
  • Cardboard
  • A paperclip.

What to do:

Glue the activity card on to cardboard.
Show your child Activity card 1 and explain it is ten numbers long.
Choose a number from the top line and then move the paper clip along that number. For example 4. Ask your child to move their finger along the bottom number line until they reach the same point. For example 6.
Explain that if you move 4 then they need to move 6 to be on the same place.
Write together the number fact, 4 + 6 = 10.

What to expect your child to do:

To make pairs of number that add up to 10.

Variation:

  • When your child can do the activity easily, use Activity Card 2 and ask your child to work out the missing number in each pair.
  • Use your home language to do this activity.
  • Write out the list of pairs of numbers together.

He Whakawhitinga Kōrero:

  • Titiro ki ngā rārangitanga o ngā tau, mai i te kore ki te tekau ki runga, mai i te tekau ki te kore ki raro. (Have a look at the lines of numbers from 0 te 10 on the top and from 10 to 0 on the bottom.)
  • Māku e whakamau atu te kini pepa ki konei, ki te 4 i te rārangi tau o runga. He aha te tau e rite ana ki te rārangi o raro? (I’ll put the paper clip here on the 4 of the top line of numbers. What is the corresponding number on the bottom line?)
  • He tauhono o te tekau tēnā takirua tau, te 4 me te 6. (That pair of numbers, 4 and 6, are numbers that add to make 10.)
  • He aha te tāpiritanga o tēnā takirua tau? Me tuhi e tāua. (What is the addition of that pair of numbers? Let’s write it down.)
  • E whā, tāpiria te ono, ka tekau. (4 plus 6 makes 10.)
