Dominoes Pairs to 100

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Purpose:

You can help your child to recall the pairs to 100.

What you need:

Set of Domino Cards. (PDF, 35 KB) You can print these or make your own.

What to do:

Cut out the 20 domino cards.
Deal three domino cards to each player. Place one domino face up between the two players and the remaining cards face down. Players take turns to match of their domino cards to the cards in the middle. Players match the two numbers that add to 100.
For example:

95
5
10
90

The next player can now match to either the 5 or the 10. If a player is unable to add a domino to the line they pick up from the face down pile.
The winner is the first player to use all their domino cards.

What to expect your child to do:

To recall the pairs of numbers that add to 100.

Variation:

  • Children can take all the cards and arrange them so the ends match to form one continuous line.
  • You can use the dominoes to call out numbers for your child to respond with the number that add to 100.
  • Make another set of domino cards using different numbers
  • Play this game using your home languages.

He Kupu Māori:

kāri tātai tau
domino card
tauhono takirua
number pair

He Whakawhitinga Kōrero:

  • Riwhiriwhia ngā kāri. (Shuffle the cards.)
  • Tohaina kia rima ngā kāri ki ia tangata. (Deal out 5 cards to each person.)
  • Whakatakotoria tētahi kāri ki waenganui i a tātou, mata ki runga. (Put down one of the cards face up in the middle.)
  • Whakaputua ērā atu o ngā kāri ko ngā mata ki raro. (Lay the other cards face down in a pile.)
  • Māu e tīmata. Āta tirohia ō kāri tātau tau. Kei a koe tētahi tau, ina tāpirihia atu ki tētahi o ngā tau i te kāri e takoto ana, ko te 100 te tapeke? (You start. Do you have a number which adds to one of the numbers on the card to make 100?)
  • Whakatakotoria tēnā kāri ki te taha, kia piritata ngā tauhono o te kotahi rau. (Lay that card down so that the number pair of 100 are next to each other.)
  • Kei ahau ināianei. Kāore i ahau tētahi tau hei hanga tauhono takirua o te kotahi rau. Māku e tango tētahi anō kāri tātai tau. (My turn now. I don’t have a number which makes a number pair of 100. I’ll pick up another domino.)
  • Tangohia tētahi anō kāri i te putunga kāri tātai tau. (Pick up another card from the pile of domino cards.)
  • Ko te tangata tuatahi kia pau katoa ana kāri, ko ia te toa. (The first person to use all their cards is the winner.)
