Number Framework Stage 4
The students who know how to count on from the first number and have connected this to counting on from the second number in the Using Materials phase may proceed straight to the Using Number Properties stage. Pose a mixture of problems in which the larger number varies between being first and second. Examples. 2 + 99, 4 + 67, 78 + 5, 5 + 47, 2 + 65, 31 + 3.... Using Number Properties
Problem: Jo has 3 cakes and Marie has 8 cakes. How many cakes are there together?
Write 3 + 8 on the board. The students model 3 counters and 8 counters and work out the answer. Discuss the methods used. The students need to see why counting on from the 8 not the 3 is the most efficient method.
