Activity

Using Materials

Problem: Tana has 7 plastic bears and he hides some.  Now his sister can see 2 bears.  How many bears did Tana hide?

Write 7 - ? = 2 on the board.  The students model 7 fingers as 5 and 2 and solve the problem.  Record the answer on the board.

Examples. Word stories and recordign for 8- ? = 5, 10 - ? = 8, 5 + ? = 7, 3 + ? = 8, 7 + ? = 10.

Using Imaging

Shielding.

Problem: Margaret has 5 stickers on her school bag and she adds 3 more.  How many stickers does she have now?

Write 5 + 3 on the board.  The students put both hands behind their backs and think about the answer. If need fold back to Using Materials.  teh studetns bring their hands in front of them and solve the problem. Record the answer on the board.  Examples. Word stories and recording for: 10 -? = 9, 6 - ? = 1, 5 + ? = 9, 3 + ? = 8, 5 + ?= 10.

Imaging Only:

Problem: What is the missing number: 9 - ? = 4.

Write 9 - ? = 4 on the board. The students think about the solution without using fingers behind their backs.  Record the answer on the board.

Examples: Word stories and recording for 6 - ? = 5, 9 - ? = 4, 1+ ? = 6, 5 + ? = 7, 7 +? = 10
