Multiple Patterns

Purpose

In this activity we use a 1-100 grid to identify multiples of single digit numbers.  In particular we are looking for patterns and how they could be used to identify multiples.

Achievement Objectives
NA3-2: Know basic multiplication and division facts.
Specific Learning Outcomes
  • Identify multiples of single digit numbers.
Required Resource Materials
  • Large 1-100 grid
  • Smaller grids for students
Activity
  1. Display a 1-100 grid (flip board or large on board).
  2. Circle the first few even numbers.  Ask for suggestions for the next number to be circled.  Talk about missing a number each time, adding two each time, multiples of two.  Ask students to identify patterns within the grid (vertical lines).  Complete the grid.
  3. Discuss, how can we tell what numbers are even numbers/multiples of two? (They have an even number as their last digit).
  4. Students could try with different numbers, multiples of three/four/five on their own grids.  Possibly create a set of ‘multiples grids’ with all the multiples from 1-9 each on a separate grid.  Try to find patterns that will help them identify multiples of each number.
