Achievement Objectives
NA1-3: Know groupings with five, within ten, and with ten.
Specific Learning Outcomes

recall groupings within 10. For example 3 and 7 make 10; 8 and 2 make 10.

Required Resource Materials
Unifix cubes
Activity
  1. Show the students ten unifix cubes, of two different colours, in a line. Explain to the students that you have a packet of ten lollies and there are two different colour lollies in the pack. For example:
    cubes.
  2. Ask:
How many red lollies are in the packet?
How many green lollies are in the packet?
  3. Confirm by counting that there are 6 red lollies and 4 green lollies in the packet, ten lollies altogether. Emphasise the number fact:
There are 6 red lollies and 4 green lollies, that’s ten lollies altogether.
  4. Provide the students with unifix cubes to work with and say:
Make some packets of lollies using 2 different colours. There need to be ten lollies in each packet.
  5. Once the students have made some lolly packets refocus their attention together as a group and ask:
What numbers of coloured lollies do you have in your packets?
  6. Clearly state the number facts as students share their work. For example:
Sam has 2 orange lollies and 8 yellow lollies in his packet, there are 10 lollies altogether.
  7. As students share their lolly packets record the number facts on the board, aiming to end with a complete list of all possibilities. For example:
    5 + 5 = 10
    3 + 7 = 10 etc
