Units of Work

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Teaching and learning activities for around five classroom mathematics sessions. Units include links to the NZC, specific learning outcomes, descriptions of sequenced teaching and learning activities, useful questions to use with students, a list of the resource materials required, and any copymasters needed.

Units of Work
In this unit we play several games based on coloured cubes and spinners. The purpose is to investigate chance and think about the concept of a fair game.
  • Recognise that not all things occur with the same likelihood.
  • Observe that some things are fairer than others.
  • Explore adjusting the rules of games to make them fairer.

Units of Work
In this unit we play probability games and learn about sample space and a sense of fairness.
  • Use dice and related equipment to assign roles and discuss the fairness of games.
  • Play probability games and identify all possible outcomes.
  • Compare and order the likelihood of simple events.

Units of Work
In this unit we have a first look at uncertainty and chance. We begin to develop an intuitive sense of what chance and possibilities are about through games that involve following rules, making predictions and seeing what happens.
  • Use everyday language to talk about chance.
  • List outcomes of simple events.

Units of Work
In this unit we develop the language of probability by considering events which are likely or unlikely. We do this using the context of children's stories.
  • Use everyday language to talk about chance.
  • Classify events as certain, possible, or impossible.

Units of Work
This unit provides students with the opportunity to explore concepts of probability in the context of a fun game - Greedy Pig.
  • Calculate the probabilities for outcomes of a dice roll.
  • Draw a dot plot of results.
  • Interpret dot plots in terms of centre and variation.
  • Calculate averages and expected values.
