# Body Measurements

Purpose

These exercises and activities are for students to use independently of the teacher to practice number and measurement skills.

Achievement Objectives
GM5-1: Select and use appropriate metric units for length, area, volume and capacity, weight (mass), temperature, angle, and time, with awareness that measurements are approximate.
GM5-2: Convert between metric units, using decimals.
NA5-3: Understand operations on fractions, decimals, percentages, and integers.
Specific Learning Outcomes

Design and use models to solve measuring problems in practical contexts.

Description of Mathematics

Multiplication and division, AP (Stage 8)

Required Resource Materials
Practice exercises (PDF or Word)
Activity

### Prior knowledge

Use decimals in calculations
Substitute into formulas
Measure accurately to the nearest mm

### Background

In this activity students explore the relationships between body measurements.  They learn to express the relationship as a formula.

Exercise 1
Asks students to measure their height and length of 3 major bones and look for relationships or patterns between the numbers.

Exercise 2
Asks students to explore the formula for height.

Exercise 3
Asks students to explore the accuracy of the height formula.

Exercise 4
Asks students to explore the relationship between foot length and height.

Exercise 5
Asks students to investigate a conjecture related to the formula.

Exercises 6 and 7
Asks students to generate their own formula to predict a person's height using lengths of specific bones.

Exercise 8
Asks students to explore the relationship between hand lengths and foot lengths and relate this to height.
