Using Māori to reinforce place value

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

“One light bulb moment ...was with a Māori student whose first language was Te Reo Māori and he was really struggling with place value......”

Students must see, hear understand that teen numbers are “ten and”. Using the place value language structure within Te Reo Māori to develop and reinforce this understanding has been successful for many students, not just for speakers of Te Reo.

Domain: Place value
Transition: 4 → 5
Barrier: Low understanding of place value, beginning with teen numbers.
