“One of the things I found needed explicit teaching....... was the incorporation of an internal number line....”

In their initial use of an Empty Number Line (ENL), students may begin to systematically locate all numbers in sequence on the line. This can slow down and impede the focused solving of the problem presented. Using a halfway benchmark to more quickly locate a higher number on an ENL is demonstrated effectively here.
