Addition and Subtraction Quick Recall

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Purpose

You can help your child to instantly recall the addition and subtraction facts whose answers are between 10 and 20.

What you need:

  • Addition and Subtraction cards (PDF, 31KB) You can print these or make your own.
  • Three containers or jars labeled “learning” “Later” “quick”.

What to do:

Print out the cards and glue them to light cardboard. This will make them more durable, or make your own cards. Work with your child to write the answers on the back.

Learning: Cut out four cards from a family of facts and put them in the “learning” container.

For example:

2 + 9

11 – 2

9 + 2

11 – 9

Later: Put the other cards in the “later” container.

Quick: As your child gets quick at giving the correct answers put the cards in the “quick” container. Don’t rush as it is important they know the family of facts before a new family of facts is moved from the “later” container to the “learning” container.

What to expect your child to do:

  • To recognise that the facts in a family of facts are related.
  • Over time expect your child to instantly recall the addition and subtraction facts to 20.

Variation:

  • Ask your child to take one card and name another member of the same family of facts.
  • Practise cards from the "quick" container.
