Purpose:
You can help your child to know the number of tens in decade numbers.
What you need:
 Ten 10c coins
 Piece of paper
What to do:
Show your child six 10c coins. Count together to find it is worth 60c (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60). Write down the number 60. Ask your child how many tens are in 60? They will count the number of coins. Show 80c and write the number 80. Ask your child how many tens are in 80? They will count the number of coins.
When your child can do these easily, without counting the number of coins, introduce a 50c coin, write the number 50 and ask how many tens are in 50?
What to expect your child to do:
They will begin by counting the number of coins to find how many tens are in a decade number. Expect over time that they will see the answer from the written number.
Variation:
As an extension write other numbers, for example 43, and ask how many tens are in 43.
