License Plates 2

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Purpose:

You can help your child learn basic addition facts.

What you need:

Paper and pencil

What to do:

As you drive in the car or walk beside the road, write down the numbers you see on vehicle license plates.

Add up each of the digits to give a total. For example, if the license plate has the numbers 5682, the total of the digits is 5+6+8+2=21. Who can spot the car with the highest total?

Add or subtract the digits to get as close as possible to zero. For example, if a license plate has the digits 3726, you might say "7+2-3-6=0".

What to expect from your child:

Your child should be able to tell you the answer to the addition facts instantly without having to count or calculate.

He Kupu Māori:

addition facts meka tāpiritanga
digit mati
total (after addition) tapeke

He Whakawhitinga Kōrero:

  • Pānuihia mai te tau o tērā motukā. (Read me the number of that car.)
  • Tuhia ki te pepa? (Write it down on paper.)
  • Tāpirihia ngā mati o taua tau. He aha te tapeke? (Add the digits of that number together. Whats the total?)
  • Kimihia te motukā he nui rawa atu te tapeke o ngā mati. (Look for the car with the biggest total of its digits.)
  • Tāpirihia ngā mati, tangohia rānei kia tino pātata atu ki te kore. (Add or subtract the digits to get close to zero.)
