Fraction, Decimals, Percentages Dominoes

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Purpose:

You can help your child to recall the fraction, decimal and percentage conversions.

What you need:

Set of Domino Cards (PDF, 36 KB). You can print these or make your own.

What to do:

Cut out the 16 domino cards.
Deal three domino cards to each player. Place one domino face up between the two players and the remaining cards in a pile face down. Players take turns to match their domino cards to the card in the middle. For example:

50%
3/4
0.75
40%
The 3/4 and 0.75 are equivalent. The next player can now match to either the 50% or the 40%. If a player is unable to add a domino to the line they pick up from the face down pile. The winner is the first player to use all their domino cards.

What to expect your child to do:

To recall the fraction, decimal and percentage conversions.

Variation:

  • Children can take all the cards and arrange them so the ends match to form one continuous line.
  • Use the dominoes to call out fractions, decimals and percentages for your children to call out an equivalent conversion.

He Kupu Māori:

kāri tātai tau
domino card
tauhono takirua

He Whakawhitinga Kōrero:

  • Riwhiriwhia ngā kāri. (Shuffle the cards.)
  • Tohaina kia toru ngā kāri ki ia tangata. (Deal out 3 cards to each person.)
  • Whakatakotoria tētahi kāri ki waenganui i a tātou, mata ki runga. (Put down one of the cards face up in the middle.)
  • Whakaputua ērā atu o ngā kāri ko ngā mata ki raro. (Lay the other cards face down in a pile.)
  • Māu e tīmata. Āta tirohia ō kāri tātai tau. Kei a koe tētahi hautau, ōrau, tau ā-ira rānei, he ōrite ki ērā i te kāri e takoto mai ana?(You start. Do you have a fraction, a percentage, or a decimal which is the same as those on the card laying here?)
  • Whakatakotoria tēnā kāri ki te taha, kia piritata ngā hautanga ōrite. (Lay that card down so that the equal fractions are next to each other.)
  • Kei ahau ināianei. Kāore i ahau tētahi hautanga ōrite. Māku e tango tētahi anō kāri tātai tau. (My turn now. I don’t have an equivalent fraction. I’ll pick up another domino.)
  • Tangohia tētahi anō kāri i te putunga kāri tātai tau. (Pick up another card from the pile of domino cards.)
  • Ko te tangata tuatahi kia pau katoa ana kāri, ko ia te toa. (The first person to use all their cards is the winner.)
