Addition Basic Facts

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Purpose:

The purpose of this activity is to help your child practise the addition facts to 20.

What you need:

  • Game board and cards (PDF,48KB)(You can print these or make your own).
  • Cardboard (Old cereal boxes are good).

What to do:

Glue the game cards on to cardboard. Cut up the game cards, shuffle and place in a face down pile between the players. Give each player a game board.
Players take turns to select two cards and arrange them to make an addition fact. For example, 4 and 12 forms the addition fact 12 + 4. It is easier to solve the fact if you add the smaller number on to the bigger number. If the answer is available on the player’s game board they can cross it off. The cards are returned to the bottom of the pile. The cards are shuffled every now and then during the game.
The winner is the first player to cross off 5 numbers on their game board.

What to expect your child to do:

They may start by recalling some of the facts instantly and using counting or part-whole strategies to work out the others. Over time expect your child to instantly recall all the addition facts to 20.

Variation:

Play until one player has crossed off 10 numbers on their game board.

He Whakawhitinga Kōrero:

  • Riwhiriwhia ngā kāri, ka whakatakoto ai hei putunga kāri, ko ngā mata ki raro. (Shuffle the cards and place them face down in a pile.)
  • Tangohia ētahi kāri e rua i te putunga kāri. (Take 2 cards from the pile.)
  • Whakamahia ō kāri e rua hei hanga i tētahi tāpiritanga. I te nuinga o te wā, he māmā ake te tāpiri i te tau iti ki te tau nui. (Use your 2 cards to make an addition. Mostly is it easier to add the smaller number to the bigger one.)
  • Tirohia tō papa tākaro. Kei konā te otinga o te tāpiritanga? Mēnā kei konā te otinga o te tāpiritanga, uhia ki te porotiti. (Look at your game board. Do you have the answer to the subtraction? If you have, cover it with a counter.)
  • Whakahokia ngā kāri ki raro o te putunga kāri. (Put your cards back on the bottom of the pile.)
  • Ko te mea tuatahi ki te uhi i ētahi tau e rima o te papa tākaro, ko ia te toa. (The one that is first to cover 5 numbers on the game board is the winner.)
