365 Penguins

This is an activity based on the picture book 365 Penguins

Multiplying fractions

The purpose of this series of lessons is to develop understanding of the multiplication of fractions.

This unit supports teaching and learning activities in the Student Fractions e-ako 10 and complements the learning activities in Book 7 Teaching Fractions, Decimals and Percentages and in Book 8 Teaching Number Sense and Algebraic Thinking.

This is the fifth in a series of units developing fractional understanding. This unit builds on these previous units of work:

The units that follow are:

Addition, subtraction and equivalent fractions

The purpose of this series of lessons is to develop understanding of equivalent fractions and the operations of addition and subtraction with fractions.

This unit supports teaching and learning activities in the Student Fractions e-ako 7 and 7+, 8 and 8+, 9 and 9+, and complements the learning activities in Book 7 Teaching Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.

This is the fourth in a series of units developing fractional understanding. This unit builds on these previous units of work:

The units that follow are:

Ordering proper and improper fractions

The purpose of this series of lessons is to develop understanding of the relative size of fractions and where these fit with whole numbers on a number line.

This unit supports teaching and learning activities in the Student Fractions e-ako 5 and 5+, 6 and 6+ and complements the learning activities in Book 7 Teaching Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.

This is the third in a series of units developing fractional understanding. This unit builds on these previous units of work:

The units that follow are:

Symbols and sets

This series of lessons builds upon the students’ experiences of making, naming and recognizing common fractions using different physical representations. Its purpose is to develop understanding of the formal language and symbols associated with simple fractions and their representations.

The purpose of this unit is also to develop students’ understanding of fractions of sets.

This unit supports teaching and learning activities in the Student Fractions e-ako 3 and 4 and complements the learning activities in Book 7 Teaching Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.

This is the second in a series of units developing fractional understanding.

This unit builds on the previous unit of work:

The units that follow are:

Big Numbers

Fair Games

Many games of chance and activities in maths text books involve rolling two dice and combining the scores, usually by addition. Students often find the probabilities of such events difficult to calculate as they are confused between events (for example a score of 4) and outcomes (for example 3 and 1, 2 and 2, 1 and 3). This unit makes use of a variety of activities where the number of outcomes in the sample space is clearly different from the number of events.

Dividing Fractions

learning how to divide a fraction by a fraction

Hitting Four

This is a level 4 measurement and number activity from the Figure It Out theme series.
