Instantly recognise patterns to 10 including doubles.
Recall the facts up to 10, and the teen facts.
Number Framework Stages 3 and 4
- Counters
- Blank card
- Tens Frames
Using Materials
Problem: Scott has 7 black sweets and he needs 10. How many more sweets does
Scott have to get?
Record 7 + ? = 10. Get out a tens frame that shows 7 dots. Discuss why the answer is 3. Put 3 counters on the tens frame. Write 3 on the board.
Examples. Word stories and recording for: 9 + ? = 10, 6 + ? = 10, 5 + ? = 10, 4 + ? = 10, 8 + ? =10 ….
Problem: What is 10 - 4?
Record 10 - 4 on the board. Take a tens frame with 10 dots on it and discuss which 4 can be removed. Cover these 4 with a blank card that shows 6 are left.
Examples. Recording for: 10 – 1, 10 – 7, 10 – 3, 7 – 5, 6 –1, 9 - 5….
Using Imaging
Shielding.
Problem: Solve 4 + ? = 10. Have 4 on a tens frame hidden from the
students. Ask the students to solve 4 + ? = 10 by imagining the spaces needed to fill
the card up. Discuss what the students are imaging. Get them to draw what they see in the air. Fold back if needed. Record the answer on the board.
Examples. Word stories and recording for: 3 + ? = 10, 6 + ? = 10, 6 + 4, 2 = 8, 3 + 5 …
Imaging Only:
Word stories and recording for: 10 - 5, 1 + ? = 10, 6 +4, ? + 8 = 10, 10 – 8, ? + 8 = 10 …
