Solve subtraction problems from 20 by separating sets and counting all the objects.

Instantly recognise patterns to 10 including doubles.

Activity

Record 9 - ? = 5. The students use fingers to realise 4 marbles were dropped.

Examples. Word stories and recording for: 10 - ? = 5, 5 + ? = 10, 9 - ? = 4, 3 + ? = 8, 5 + ? = 8.

Problem: Charlotte has $7 and she buys an ice cream for $2. How much does she have left?

 

Record 7 - 2 on the board. The students model 7 fingers and try to solve the problem by removing the hand showing 2 fingers. Discuss the answer. Write 7 - 2 = 5 on the board.

Examples. Word stories and recording for: 3 + 5, 8 . 3, 4 + 5, 10 - 5, 7 - 5, 10 - 5,  5 + 5..

Problem: Grant has 9 marbles. On the way to school he drops some. At school he finds he has only 5. How many marbles did he drop?
