Strategic Solving Part I

Purpose

These exercises and activities are for students to use independently of the teacher to practise number properties.

Achievement Objectives
NA3-1: Use a range of additive and simple multiplicative strategies with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages.
NA3-6: Record and interpret additive and simple multiplicative strategies, using words, diagrams, and symbols, with an understanding of equality.
Specific Learning Outcomes

write family of facts based on a given equation

choose a strategy to solve addition and subtraction problems

Description of Mathematics

Addition and Subtraction, AA (Stage 6)

Required Resource Materials
Practice exercises with answers (PDF or Word)
Activity

Prior knowledge

Use a range of number strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems with whole numbers.
Write families of facts for addition.
Have an understanding of = sign.

Background

By rearranging equations it may be easier to find a solution to the equation. Students need a clear understanding of equality to rearrnge equations correctly.  This activity gives students the opportunity to revise mental strategies.

Comments on the Exercises

Exercise 1:
Asks students to revise the different ways a number fact with three numbers can be recorded to find a form that enables x to be easily calculated.

Exercise 2:
Asks students to rearrange an equation containing x , and then explain the strategy to calcualte x.

Homework Exercises

Exercise 3. This could be used as homework. It asks students to solve word problems.
