The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Purpose:

  • To practice adding tens and ones.

You need:

  • Game board (one per player) (PDF, 289KB)
  • Two spinners or dice the same colour to represent the ones.
    • 1,1,2,2,3,3
    • 1,2,3,4,5,6
  • Two spinners or dice the same colour to represent the tens.
    • 1,1,2,2,3,3
    • 1,2,3,4,5,6
  • 8 counters (buttons, walnut shells, pebbles) per player

How to play:

  • Each player has their turn to throw the 4 dice or spin the spinners.
  • First they add the tens together then they add the ones together. Next they add the tens and ones together to make their new number. For example, if they throw a 4 and a 2 on the red dice/spinners they have 6 tens. If they throw a 3 and a 6 on the blue dice/spinners they have 9 ones. They add the tens and ones together to get 60 + 9 = 69.
  • If they have that corresponding number on one of their flies they are allowed to cover that number.
  • If the number is already covered they miss a turn.
  • The winner is the first spider to have all their flies covered.

Variation:

  • They can use any two dice for the tens and any two dice for the ones in order to get a number on their board.
