Using Professional Learning Communities

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

To use the Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) on nzmaths you will need to have an account on the website.  You can create one by clicking on the 'Login/Create Account' link at the bottom of the navigation list on the left hand side of the site.  None of the instructions below will work unless you are logged into your account.

Joining a Professional Learning Community

A list of available PLCs can be found by going to https://nzmaths.co.nz/plc.  Some of these may be open to join, while others may require you to request membership, which will then be approved by a moderator.  There are also closed PLCs, which do not appear on this list and are only available by invitation.

Using Professional Learning Communities

A list of the PLCs you are a member of appears on your account's home page (click on 'My account' in the left hand navigation list to see it).

To view the content of a PLC, click on its name in this list.

The first page of the PLC will include a description of the content and purpose for that PLC, followed by a list of discussion threads.

Clicking on the title of a discussion thread will take you to the content of that thread.  A thread includes comments, which are shaded in yellow, and replies, which are white.  Within a thread you can either make a new comment, reply to an existing comment, or reply to an existing reply.

When a new comment or reply is added to a PLC that you are a member of, you will be notified by email. You can reply to the comment by clicking on the link in the email.  If you are curerntly logged in to the website, you will be taken directly to that comment.  If not you will be asked to log in and then redirected to the comment.

Editing notifications

By default, each PLC will automatically email you to notify you whenever a comment is posted. You can stop these notifications or adjust their frequency by changing your account settings:

  1. Click on 'My account' in the left hand navigation list.
  2. Click on the 'Notifications' tab at the top of the screen, and then the 'Subscriptions' sub-tab.
  3. This will provide a list of all PLCs you are a member of.  Clicking on the 'edit' link relating to a specific PLC will bring up a list of options for your notifications.  You can choose to receive emails immediately, hourly, twice a day, daily, or weekly.  If you would prefer not to receive email notifications you can choose the 'inactive' radio button.
  4. Remember to click the 'Save' button once you have made your changes.
  5. If you want to adjust the frequency of notifications for ALL of your PLCs, you can do so on the 'Edit' tab of your account.

Personal profile

If you wish to have a picture of yourself (avatar) appear beside your posts you can upload one to your account:

  1. Click on 'My account' in the left hand navigation list.
  2. Choose the 'Edit' tab at the top of the screen
  3. You can upload a picture from this page.  Click on the' Personal Information' sub-tab if you want to include a brief personal description.
  4. Remember to click the 'Save' button once you have made your changes.
